Xerox Samurai No.7 by The-BenT-One Xerox Samurai No.7 by The-BenT-One
Title - Xerox Samurai
Media - Industrial Cardboard and Garbage Bags
Time - 63 hrs
completed early November, 2009

This was the result of a project for my Intro to Sculpture class. The assignment was to take one material and use another to bind the first material together. One of the options was to make something that could be worn. I then proceeded to make a full scale replica of a suit of japanese samurai armor. I put in far more time than was necessary, but the result is as you see above.

This piece has been accepted to the Functional Art Show art the EckHaus Gallery in Kutztown, PA. [link]

The thematic contrast is cool! I like the blatant "xerox" on the forehead, it makes the armor recognize what it's made out of, but still surpass the expected quality of the medium

I'm glad you like the armor! The secret is getting lots of references, taking measurements of your body and sticking to them when constructing the final piece, and the ability to be flexible with the design as your imagination comes up with new ideas on the fly. I chose Samurai Armor since it has more of a simple design than other types of armor in history. I'm actually still interested in making more pieces, possibly bases of Gladiator armor...

It's very creative, it's incredible what you could do with only two materials and the detail is amazing :iconilikeitplz:

Thanks! This was super fun to make. If I ever get time again, I want to make a suit of knight's armor with a sword, lance, and shield.

I got a huge box. I believe it was a box for a fax/copier machine, so the cardboard was much thicker and stronger than standard cardboard. I just used that one box, but I planned out the shaped carefully before hand so they would maximize the space. Also, those aren't shoelaces holding it together, those are strips of garbage bags.

Sadly, there is no plan. I looked for one before I started the project, and I couldn't find any that were detailed enough. I did most of the measurments exactly to fit my body, and there were many alterations as I built it. The original notes are lost.

If I ever have the amount of time it would take put together a plan for it, I will post it here. Keep your eyes peeled.

6'2", average build. however, it's the loops that bind to my arms and legs that can't be adjusted, as well as the helmet. multiple people have tried to put it on, but it only fits my head because that's how I made it. but, sadly, it's not for sale. I need it for a show and for my portfolio. However, I may make more of them in the future if I can find the same type of cardboard...
